Mini-symposium on STEM issues in Rural Schools

- Prof's Rob Thorne and Julia Thum from the Physics Department will speak about the PhysTech program and Research project and how rural areas can benefit from enhanced STEM education.

1st Anniversary of the Creation of the NYS Center for Rural Schools
- September 28th marked the one year anniversary of the Founding of the Center.
- In early October, the State of NY finalized the contract with Cornell University to fund and operate the Center.
National Rural Education Association (NREA) held their annual meeting in Cincinnatti.
- John Sipple, Lisa McCabe and Hope Casto were awarded the Howard A. Dawson Award for the Top Research Paper.
Rural Schools Association of NYS held their annual meeting in Cooperstown.
Small District Summit, Syracuse: March 26th
- Jointly sponsored by the Center, REAC, and the Rural Schools Association of NYS
- Superintendents and Board Members from districts serving 500 students or fewer participated in a one-day summit to discuss and learn about issues of common concern.
Lecture Series
- A series of five talks were presented at Cornell to explore the range of questions and problems that connect faculty research with the needs and interests of rural schools
Albany Visit: January 23 and March 4
- John Sipple visited with key staffers of NYS Assemblypersons and Senators representing rural New York State
Washington Visit: February 24
- John Sipple visited with key staffers of U.S. Representatives and Senators representing New York State
REAC Showcase, Albany: March 10th (view presentation)
- John Sipple and Lisa McCabe will share policy recommendations following their three-year study of early care and education in Rural NYS
